Willie Funk

 The Following Information was written just before the Pig Bowl in November 2003

 
Born and raised in Hood River, Willie graduated from Hood River Valley School in 1988.  Willie has spent most of the last 14 years working for Les Schwab Tire Center in The Dalles.  In January of this year Willie was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML), a disease doctors suspect he’s had for over 3 years.  Although Willie has had his blood counts controlled; he will need a bone marrow transplant to cure the disease.  The process is underway with 2 perfectly matched doe, and the transplant is expected to take place in early November. Money raised during thisnors in lin event will help cover the cost of finding the donors, (between $7-20,000) pay for housing and utilities in Portland, along with prescription drug costs.  Willie will be at OHSU for up to 45 days and then have to live within 20 minutes of the hospital for another 100 days during recovery for close monitoring.  Three of the Funk’s children will stay behind in The Dalles to live with grandparents during this time.  Any other monies raised will greatly aid the family as Willie and his wife Rhonda leave their jobs during his treatment and recovery over the next year.
